PUBLIC COMMENTS FROM KENTUCKY VOTERS

CHANGE THE KENTUCKY VOTER REGISTRATION
TO INCLUDE CATEGORY FOR INDEPENDENT VOTERS

We support the proposed Board of Elections’ regulation to insure that voters who register “Other” on the Kentucky Voter Registration form be accurately counted.  However, the regulation does not meet the needs of independent voters.

The current form only permits voters to register as “Democrat”, “Republican”, or “Other”. There is no place for voters who do not want to register into a party to designate that choice.  39% of the national electorate identify themselves as independents. In Kentucky, while the numbers of independents are increasing, only 6% are registered as “Other”. We believe this is because independent voters do not identify with the category, “Other”, which implies an “Other” party.

We urge you to amend the proposed regulation to add a category to the registration form such as “independent” or “no party”.  This will permit all Kentucky voters to accurately designate their registration choices.

Sincerely,
